Even until our days, Carpathos has undoubtedly been one of the most important pants of Greece because of the preservation of its most onteresting folk cylture and the severity of its social structure .This is why , in the last few decades , multidimentional
Scientificresearch has been conducted (both by Greeks and foreigners) which has focused on the island and based on various approaches of its social structure and folk creation .But no matter how much research is done , there's always soothing new in Carpathos fo the researcher interested in any particular aspect of its culture.
In the musical field , for example , this meeting gave ups the opportunity to discover some interesting melodies used for the mandinadas and also to admire the masterful ability of the Carpathians for verse-making during their feasts , so easily and spontaneously held at anytime .This is where one can also enjoy ancient narrative songs based on slow melodies and lengthy-sometimes improvised-narrations of historical or legendary events in a fast melodic recitation, reminiscent of the wondering poets of Cyprus.
Dance and music in Carpathos with its musical expression, one could discern three main regions, bearing minor differences mostly concerning matters of style and repertoire.
Olympos and upper (northern) villages , the middle villages (Messochori and Spoa)
And the low (southern) villages. Going from South to North we find out that the trasmbouna is the main instrument (accompanied by the old type of pear-shared lyra, its bow bearing little bells)while the tunes become faster and the repertoire becomes older and more austere. When going from North to South we find the lyra prevailing, with a much more embellished way of playing (in messochori ) while the also appears. The laouto only appeared in the island for the fist time in the 20th century.
The most common dances are the low dance (Kato choros)and the soust , while the Zervos (danced in a clockwise direction)and the Antipatitis (mainly in the middle villages)are less popular. Dances like the Calamatianos is more oriented towards agriculture and stock-breeding ,not lacking of course in sea occupations also .But latter exist to a rather limited extent, mostly covering local needs of trade, transportation and fishing .Nevertheless , we find a variety of sea themes in its musical repertoire, in the from of mantinadas but also as sea-related narrative songs , which in addition, are rarely seen in the rest of Greece .In this meeting , we have listened to some of these:
1. Symiakos and variations
2. Mantinada tunes and embellishments of the sea
3. Antipatitis
4. Sousta
5. Zervos
6. "didn't tell you wicked girl"
7. Gonatistos-Pano choros
