By merely looking at the map of Greece, one immediately sees its double character :land and sea. A character reflected in every aspect of social and financial life. throughout the centuries of Greek history. The sea , washing from three directions , seams as though it is embracing it and so it prevails as an element , as well as in items of extent .Moreover, due to an inexplicable game of nature, or to a cosmogony as the ancients would have said, the Greek seas filled with countless islands(a few thousand large and small islands, rocky islets , rocks and reefs )a few hundred of which are inhabited, each one writing its own history in the course of centuries.
   All these islands and coastal regions , which have created the famous Greek civilization in the various version., have followed since the ancient times a historic course characterised by the straggle to harness the sea, to prevail over it and finally to survive through it .This course has left its trails the deeds and thought, as a heritage for the global community, and it has been depicted vividly both the songs of the sea sung by the Greek people as well as in their sea -retated activities.
   The roots of the sing lay in the onsert of the Greek civilization, leaving, from the earliest times. Such traces as the famous idols of Keros (harpist and flutist, 2400 B.C) and a brilliant unequalled sample "The Odyssey" chronicles the wanderings of Odysseus, a traveler from Ithaca (a small island in the Ionian Sea) and takes place mostly in the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas, but perhaps even beyond the Herculean Pillars i.e the strait of Gibraltar.
   But the myth-making power of Homer and the contraction of his storytelling around the heroic figure of Odysseus is nothing more than a poetic description( in the narrative song) of the than a poetic description (in the from of narrative song) of the desperate struggle and the deeds of the Greek people while exploring the seaways, becoming acquainted with all the magical places to which they led and finally conquering them.    These songs describe actual events of those days in an allegorical way. For the people on the time, such new and terrifying experience would trigger their creative imagination as they were trying to understand the word.
   In the same sense, greek mythology contains a deep, inner historical nucleus Many of the myths of which it consists actually reflect conclusions and convictions as well as the ancient people's way of perceiving the word , aw it was known at the time. This is how through the myths, the Aegean Sea and its surrounding regions appear as the cradle of the Greek culture. This is where the birth of music and dance is placed specifically in the island of Crete, where -as the myth goes- the Couretes were dancing to the rhythmical sound of the musical instruments , in order to cover the sound of the new born Zeus' crying , the protecting him from his father Cronus who would eat his offspring.
